The Vertex is a 70’ tall apartment complex and public service area that takes on the concepts of site and continuous surfaces through out the design. The Vertex incorporates the angles of the context around the site to give the building a continuous surface made of different angled straight lines. This serves as the public space of the complex, where the public has access. Within this ribbon-like, continuous surface would be art displays, shops, circulation, and other public features. Within this structure are private apartments only accessible by the residents. There are 4 apartment structures within the public space. Each one has its own circulation tower with elevator and stairs. The apartment buildings have 4 floors each holding as many as 3-5 units. Atop each apartment building is a semi-private rooftop space accessible by the inhabitants of that apartment. Each floor of the apartments are raised, rotated, and stretched to give different views for the residences of the units.
The diagram depicts the initial design concepts on the site. The ideas of optical illusion and site context governed the design process.
Diagrams represent the influence that the site and site curves have on the design process.
Axonometric depicts circulation, public and private areas in the apartment complex.
Diagrams represent private and public circulation, structure and massing.
